I'm not from New York. Midwesterner here. And I'd love to read books about young people not from New York just because I don't always relate to apartments and the closeness and interconnectedness that New Yorkers seem to exude. I love the diversity that is shown even among the diaspora. But I really ended up loving the stories and the interactions. It also showed me that that though I am accepting of alternative lifestyles and people, I need to be more sensitive because those stories were a little uncomfortable for me. So not only were the stories good, they taught me some lessons. With that said, I loved the diverse points of view and the love that each story showed. I loved the lessons. I loved the visuals. Just lovely. Kudos to all of the authors AUDIO BOOK REVIEWI’ll try to NOT include spoilers. This is a anthology - different authors (all bipoc I believe) writing about 6 different teen couples (also all African American) during a modern day NYC blackout. It is YA, which I usually enjoy, even though my teen years are behind me. I only purchased because I am a fan of Angie Thomas. It is a celebration of young black love and I’m glad it was represented across the “love is love” spectrum. (I wish Jason Reynolds would have had a slot.) Gay teens need stories that are not oversexualized but about the uni resale experiences of just falling in love and out of love. Being gay is an identity, not just about sex. I am slowly digesting it. Then yesterday, I saw that THE OBAMAS and Netflix are involved in an onscreen version of this. This has the material to make a great on screen version.So, my advise is to read or listen to the book. The part that made me the most uncomfortable was when a child was being bullied (may have been a trigger for me); the gay kids and their stories did not make me uncomfortable at all.
